Ben Stokes Announces Retirement from International Cricket Amid Test Series Against New Zealand

New Delhi, June 28: England’s captain Ben Stokes has announced his retirement from international cricket during the ongoing third Test against New Zealand. This decision comes after a challenging week, during which Stokes missed the second Test due to an incident at a nightclub in London.
The 35-year-old informed his teammates about his decision before the fourth day of the match at Trent Bridge. Stokes will play the final two days of the match before bidding farewell to a career that has provided England with many memorable moments.
An emotional Stokes addressed the team before the fourth day’s play, urging everyone to finish the match with full commitment. In a video shared by England Cricket, Stokes stated, “Reasons can be discussed later, but I have seen many tough times for this team, for you guys, and for those who played before me. I am about to face another tough period. I just want everyone to do the same. We have a lot of hard work ahead. I want us to leave the field knowing that this group gave everything over the last two days. I want everyone to give their all, not just for me, but for the team. I have managed my emotions. Now it’s time to get to work.”
England Cricket shared a video on their social media platform, X, stating, “One of the greatest captains in England’s history, Ben Stokes has decided to retire from international cricket after this Test match. Ben, you have been the most inspiring captain, leader, and legend this team could ever hope for. We love you and wish you the best in retirement. England will never be the same again.”
Stokes did not play in the second Test against New Zealand after breaking a night curfew and being involved in a club controversy, leading to discussions about removing him from the captaincy and the team. Speculation about his retirement had been circulating since then. Before returning to lead England at Trent Bridge, Stokes had only mentioned that he would captain the team “this week,” hinting at what was to come.
Stokes retires as one of England’s finest match-winners. His unbeaten 84 in the thrilling final against New Zealand in 2019 secured England’s first ODI World Cup title. Six weeks later, his remarkable unbeaten 135 at Headingley inspired one of the greatest Ashes victories against Australia. He also played a crucial role in England’s T20 World Cup win in 2022. Over his Test career, Stokes has played 122 matches, in addition to being part of 114 ODIs and 43 T20s for the English team.
