New Delhi, April 8: India and Bangladesh have agreed to take significant steps to enhance their bilateral relations. In a high-level meeting on Wednesday in New Delhi, Indian Foreign Minister S. Jaishankar and Bangladeshi Foreign Minister AK Abdul Momen discussed key issues such as visa facilitation, energy cooperation, and extradition. The meeting was also attended by Humayun Kabir, the foreign affairs advisor to the Prime Minister of Bangladesh.

During the discussions, Jaishankar reiterated India’s commitment to engaging constructively and positively with Bangladesh’s new government. He emphasized the need for both countries to explore new avenues for mutual cooperation to strengthen their bilateral ties. Both sides agreed to work on concrete proposals to deepen collaboration through various bilateral mechanisms. They also extensively discussed regional and global issues.

Following the meeting, indications were given that high-level and official meetings between the two countries will continue soon, paving the way for new dimensions of cooperation.

Foreign Minister Momen stated that under the leadership of Prime Minister Tarique Rahman, the BNP government will advance its foreign policy based on the “Bangladesh First” principle, which focuses on mutual trust, respect, and shared interests.

During the talks, Minister Jaishankar announced that the Indian visa process for Bangladeshi citizens, particularly for medical and business visas, will be simplified in the coming weeks to enhance people-to-people contact and boost economic activities.

In discussing energy cooperation, Momen thanked India’s Minister of Petroleum and Natural Gas, Hardeep Singh Puri, for the recent diesel supply and requested an increase in the supply of diesel and fertilizers. Minister Puri assured that the Indian government would consider this request positively and promptly.

Both parties also agreed to continue discussions on other pending and significant bilateral issues.

During his visit to India, Momen also met with National Security Advisor Ajit Doval and Minister Hardeep Singh Puri, where they had in-depth discussions on security, energy, and strategic cooperation.

Minister Puri shared on the social media platform ‘X’ that he had meaningful conversations with the Bangladeshi Foreign Minister and his delegation regarding enhancing cooperation in the energy sector.
