Balendra Shah Sworn in as Nepals 47th Prime Minister

Kathmandu, March 27: Balendra Shah, also known as Balen Shah, has been appointed as Nepal’s new Prime Minister. He is the 47th individual to hold this position. President Ram Chandra Paudel officially appointed him to the role.

The President’s office stated that Shah was appointed under Article 76(1) of the Constitution during a ceremony held on Friday. Shah, who previously served as the Mayor of Kathmandu Metropolitan City, was chosen as the leader of the National Independent Party (RSP) on Thursday, paving the way for his ascension to the premiership. The RSP recently achieved a significant victory in the parliamentary elections, securing nearly two-thirds of the seats.

Shah took the oath of office at 12:34 PM on Friday in a grand ceremony at the President’s office. The oath was administered in accordance with Hindu traditions, beginning with the sound of conch shells, which symbolize success and positivity in auspicious events.

In the elections, Shah defeated former Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli by a substantial margin, receiving 68,348 votes compared to Oli’s 18,734. This marks the highest number of votes received by any candidate in Nepal’s parliamentary elections since 1991.

Shah entered politics in 2022 when he ran for Mayor of Kathmandu as an independent candidate and won. Born on April 27, 1990, in Kathmandu to a Madhesi family, he completed his Bachelor’s degree in Kathmandu before earning a Master’s in Structural Engineering from Visvesvaraya Technological University in India.

His academic background in engineering has provided him with practical insights into infrastructure, urban development, and public works. This technical expertise has played a crucial role in shaping his governance style as the Mayor of Kathmandu Metropolitan City.
