Avalanche Strands Vehicles in Ladakhs Zojila Pass; Relief Operations Underway

Leh, March 27: A significant avalanche struck the Zojila Pass in Ladakh on Friday, blocking several vehicles on the Srinagar-Leh highway. Fortunately, there have been no reports of casualties. Ladakh’s Lieutenant Governor, VK Saxena, has taken note of the incident and has directed immediate relief and rescue operations.

In a post on the social media platform X, Saxena expressed his concern over the unfortunate avalanche news. He instructed the Deputy Commissioner and SSP of Kargil to visit the site promptly and initiate relief efforts.

He added that disaster relief teams and all government agencies, including the BRO, are on high alert. Saxena is personally monitoring the situation.

Officials reported that the avalanche occurred early Friday morning in the Ladakh section of Zojila Pass. Many passenger vehicles were trapped under the debris, but there have been no reports of injuries.

Following the incident, the highway has been closed, and rescue and clearance operations are underway to remove the debris and restore traffic.

Currently, the Srinagar-Leh highway (NH-1, previously NH-1D) is a vital two-lane road spanning 434 kilometers, connecting Srinagar to Leh in Ladakh. Known for its elevation and stunning views, this highway traverses the Zojila Pass, which stands at 11,575 feet.

A tunnel is being constructed above the Zojila Pass. Once operational, it will provide year-round safe connectivity between the Union Territory of Ladakh and the rest of the country.

The under-construction tunnel will pass beneath the Zojila Pass, linking Sonamarg in Jammu and Kashmir’s Ganderbal district with Dras in Ladakh’s Kargil district.

This single-tube, two-lane road tunnel, shaped like a horseshoe, will have a width of 9.5 meters, a height of 7.57 meters, and a length of 14.2 kilometers, situated at an altitude of approximately 12,000 feet.

Together with the already operational Z-Mor tunnel, this strategically important project on the Srinagar-Leh highway will provide weather-resistant connectivity to the Ladakh region year-round, boost tourism and the economy, and strengthen logistical arrangements for the Indian Armed Forces.
