Perth, October 19 (Daily Kiran): Australia defeated India by seven wickets in the first ODI at Perth on Saturday to take a 1–0 lead in the three-match series. The rain-affected contest was shortened to 26 overs per side, with Australia comfortably chasing the revised target.

After winning the toss, Australia opted to bowl first. India, batting first, managed to score 136 for 9 in 26 overs, as rain repeatedly interrupted play. Following a DLS adjustment, Australia were given a revised target of 131 runs in 26 overs, which they achieved in 21.1 overs, losing just three wickets.

Chasing 131, Australia had a shaky start when Travis Head (8) and Matthew Short (8) fell early to Arshdeep Singh and Axar Patel, respectively. However, captain Mitchell Marsh and Josh Philippe steadied the innings with a solid partnership of over 50 runs. Philippe was dismissed for 37 off 29 balls, but Marsh (46 not out off 52) and Matt Renshaw (21 not out) guided the hosts to victory.

For India, Arshdeep Singh, Axar Patel, and Washington Sundar took one wicket each.

Earlier, India’s batting faltered badly as they lost Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, and captain Shubman Gill during the powerplay. Both Rohit and Kohli — returning to the field after 223 days — failed to make an impact, scoring 8 and 0 respectively. Shreyas Iyer also departed for 11 runs.

KL Rahul (38 off 31) and Axar Patel (31) tried to rebuild the innings, but rain interruptions disrupted their rhythm. Once play resumed, quick wickets fell and India could only manage 136 for 9 in the allotted 26 overs.

For Australia, Matthew Kuhnemann, Mitchell Owen, and Josh Hazlewood picked up two wickets each, while Mitchell Starck and Nathan Ellis claimed one apiece.

The second ODI between the two sides will be played in Adelaide on October 23.
