
New Delhi, July 2: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma met with Union Civil Aviation Minister Ram Mohan Naidu Kinjirapu on Thursday to review the progress of proposed aviation projects in the state. The discussion focused on expediting the approval for the Silchar Greenfield Airport and accelerating other airport projects.
Following the meeting at Rajiv Gandhi Bhawan in New Delhi, Chief Minister Sarma shared on the social media platform ‘X’ that their conversation was highly positive and meaningful. Both leaders agreed on a shared vision to establish Assam as a major aviation and logistics hub in Northeast India.
The meeting reviewed the progress of six proposed Greenfield airports: Silchar, Manas, Umrangso, Majuli, Dibrugarh, and Charadevpur, along with a proposed heliport project in Haflong.
The Chief Minister noted that the state government has completed most of the initial preparations for the proposed Greenfield Airport in Silchar. He urged the Union Ministry of Civil Aviation to grant swift approval for this project so that construction work can commence promptly.
He also mentioned that there was consensus on accelerating the ongoing pre-feasibility studies for other proposed Greenfield airports, facilitating their advancement to the next phase soon.
Additionally, the meeting reviewed the expansion work of Rupsi Airport, which has emerged as a significant center for regional air connectivity in western Assam.
The Chief Minister expressed that this is an encouraging time for Assam’s aviation sector. He emphasized that the government’s goal is not only to enhance air connectivity but also to stimulate economic activities through airport infrastructure expansion, strengthen logistics networks, promote tourism, and provide new direction for the state’s long-term development.
He stated that the construction of the proposed Greenfield airports would improve air connectivity to remote areas and significantly aid in developing Assam as a key transportation and logistics gateway in Northeast India.
The meeting was attended by Civil Aviation Secretary Sameer Kumar Sinha, the Chief Minister’s Additional Chief Secretary Dr. K.K. Dwivedi, Assam Bhawan’s Resident Commissioner Kavita Padmanabhan, and senior officials from both sides.
