New Delhi, March 18: In a significant political shift ahead of next month’s assembly elections, Assam MP Pradyut Bordoloi has joined the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), dealing a major blow to the Congress party. Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma welcomed Bordoloi into the BJP on Wednesday.
Bordoloi took his membership in the BJP during a ceremony in New Delhi, where Assam BJP President Dilip Saikia facilitated the process in the presence of Chief Minister Sarma. Sarma expressed confidence that Bordoloi’s inclusion would strengthen the party further.
During a press conference, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma stated, “Today, Pradyut Bordoloi, the sitting MP from Nagaon, has joined the BJP. Our state president Dilip Saikia has welcomed him into our party. Bordoloi has served as an MP from Nagaon twice and was a former minister in the Tarun Gogoi-led Congress cabinet. He has been associated with Congress since 1975. Therefore, his joining the BJP will undoubtedly make our party stronger.”
In his remarks, Bordoloi mentioned that he had no choice but to resign from Congress. He alleged that he faced repeated humiliation within the Assam unit of the party and found the environment there unfriendly for his work.
“This decision was painful, but it was unavoidable. I feel sad taking this step, but I had no other option left. I was mentally hurt and completely exhausted,” he said. Bordoloi claimed that several senior Congress leaders had disrespected him on multiple occasions, leading to a sense of isolation within the party.
He also acknowledged the role of Congress in shaping his political career, stating, “The Congress party has given me a lot. Whatever I am today is because of Congress.” He clarified that his decision was not a disregard for the party’s legacy but was driven by the current circumstances.
