Shiv Sagar, August 4: The flood situation in Shiv Sagar, Assam, has reached alarming levels. Many homes are submerged, leaving residents in distress. The Assam Bhaskar Statistical Council has initiated a relief program, distributing essential supplies in flood-affected areas including Shiv Sagar, Charaideo, and Nazira.
Several leaders from the Assam Gana Parishad participated in the relief efforts, including AGP district president Ghana Gogoi and other party officials. The team distributed aid to families impacted by the floods as part of the organization’s humanitarian initiative.
An elderly couple in Bhadhara village has been severely affected. A portion of their home was washed away by the Dorika River, worsening their situation. The 70-year-old husband is caring for his wife, who has difficulty seeing and hearing. They have very little space in their damaged shelter and have been living on a makeshift platform made of wooden planks placed on bricks for the past 16 days.
Luna Leela, a representative from the women’s group ‘Aparupa,’ stated, “We have come here as part of a women’s organization. Donations were collected from 76 women’s groups, and 22-23 women have come together to provide relief. You can see the conditions here; we are standing amidst floodwaters. It is our responsibility to help each other.”
Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced that the flood relief efforts are entering a new phase. Alongside providing aid, the government aims to systematically rebuild the damaged public infrastructure and assist every family on the road to recovery.
The Chief Minister further remarked that the floods in Upper Assam have left devastation in their wake. An unexpected 400 percent increase in rainfall has caused flooding in districts that typically do not experience such events. He is closely monitoring the situation, while three of his colleagues have been on the ground since the disaster began.
“The flood situation is quite serious. Today, I visited Charaideo district to assess the ground reality. It is indeed a grave situation. The Assam government and the Indian government will make every effort to assist the affected individuals,” the Chief Minister stated.
