Guwahati, August 4: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has announced a significant relief package for families affected by recent floods in the state. Approximately ₹1.6 billion will be transferred directly into the bank accounts of beneficiaries.
In a post on the social media platform X, Chief Minister Sarma shared that around 75,000 of the most affected families across four districts will receive interim assistance of ₹15,000 each. Additionally, eligible beneficiaries will also receive subsidies under the PM Surya Ghar scheme from the state government.
The Chief Minister emphasized that the government aims to provide immediate financial support to affected families, enabling them to restore their lives without delay. Final compensation will be determined after comprehensive surveys and assessments.
He also announced that families severely impacted in Sivasagar and Charaideo districts will receive an additional ₹10,000 in aid within the coming days.
During his visit to flood-affected areas, Chief Minister Sarma met with residents and listened to their concerns. He reassured the affected families that the state government stands firmly with them during this challenging time and will provide all possible assistance.
“Today, ₹15,000 has been sent to 75,000 families through DBT. This natural disaster has taken so much from our people. Now, it is our responsibility to rehabilitate every flood-affected family,” he stated.
The CM noted that the floods in Upper Assam have caused significant devastation. The region experienced 400% more rainfall than usual, leading to flooding in areas that typically remain dry. He has been closely monitoring the situation, with three of his colleagues working on the ground since the onset of the disaster.
Chief Minister Sarma also visited the severely affected Nepali Khuti village. He remarked on the collective spirit of Assam, highlighting how even young children are donating from their piggy banks for relief efforts. “These are not just piggy banks; they represent our children’s contribution to Assam’s robust flood relief campaign. The level of destruction is immense, but the administration is fully engaged in relief and rehabilitation efforts, aiming to restore normalcy as soon as possible,” he added.
He conducted a survey of flood-affected areas in Charaideo district via boat. Despite the water levels receding, many locations still have standing water. During this time, he met with residents who have returned home, assuring them of all necessary support.
The Chief Minister also met with the family of a young woman who lost her life in the floods. He expressed deep sorrow over their loss and stated that the government is rapidly working to strengthen flood protection infrastructure and develop long-term solutions to prevent such tragedies in the future.
He reported that residents in Sivasagar have repeatedly raised concerns about recurring floods and threats from the Dikhow River. In response, the government has announced the construction of a new embankment in Sundarpukhuri to provide better flood protection for the area in the future.
“The floods in Assam have caused unimaginable devastation. Our government is making every effort for the rehabilitation and reconstruction of affected areas. We will continue to provide all possible assistance to help our people overcome this crisis,” he concluded.
