Assam Chief Minister Inaugurates Barak Valley Secretariat and Launches Development Projects Worth ₹340 Crores

Silchar, March 14: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma dedicated the Assam Secretariat to the people of Barak Valley on Saturday. He also inaugurated and laid the foundation for various development projects worth approximately ₹340 crores across the three districts of Cachar, Hailakandi, and Karimganj.

Speaking at the event in Silchar, the Chief Minister emphasized that the new secretariat marks a significant step towards decentralizing governance and bringing administration closer to the residents of Barak Valley.

The Assam Secretariat complex, built on 15 bighas of land and covering an area of 18,585 square meters, was completed within 36 months. The complex includes the main secretariat building, a conference hall with a seating capacity for 747 people, a guest house, the Chief Minister’s residence, quarters for officials, and residential quarters for Grade-III and Grade-IV employees.

The offices of the Chief Minister, the Chief Minister’s Additional Chief Secretary, and the Minister for Barak Valley Development are located on the sixth floor of the secretariat building.

Sarma noted that for many years, the decision-making process in Assam was largely centralized in Guwahati. However, the current government prioritizes balanced regional development and decentralization.

He mentioned that a session of the assembly was previously held in Kokrajhar, and a new secretariat is also being established in Dibrugarh, where construction of an assembly complex is currently underway.

“The government should reach the people, not the other way around. The new secretariat will make government services more accessible for the residents of Barak Valley,” Sarma stated.

Earlier that day, the Chief Minister inaugurated the Silchar Convention Center in Shilakuri, constructed at a cost of ₹15.6 crores. This facility features a conference room with a seating capacity for 142 people, guest rooms, a VIP lounge, a media room, and parking for approximately 80 vehicles.

Sarma also laid the foundation for several infrastructure, healthcare, and connectivity projects in the districts of Cachar, Hailakandi, and Karimganj.
