
Guwahati, April 10: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma expressed satisfaction with the voter turnout in the recent assembly elections held on Thursday. He noted that the enthusiasm shown, particularly among Hindu and indigenous communities, reflects a strong commitment to the democratic process.
After the voting concluded, CM Sarma highlighted a significant increase in participation from local and indigenous voters. He described this active engagement as a positive sign for democracy, stating that it strengthens the electoral system and reflects public trust in governance.
Sarma emphasized that the rising voter turnout indicates that people are becoming more aware and eager to exercise their democratic rights. He remarked that the peaceful voting process and the enthusiasm of voters showcase a vibrant democratic culture in the state.
The Chief Minister expressed confidence in the victory of the Bharatiya Janata Party-led coalition, predicting that it could secure over 90 seats in the 126-member assembly. He pointed out that the widespread public support from various regions clearly indicates a mandate in favor of the ruling coalition.
Sarma also stated that higher voter turnout would strengthen the democratic framework and lead to a more representative government. He believes that the final results will reflect the aspirations of the people, as this election witnessed one of the highest participations in recent years.
According to the Election Commission, Assam recorded a historic voter turnout of 85.38%, surpassing the previous record of 84.67% in 2016. Officials reported that the voting process was largely peaceful, with only minor incidents reported in a few locations.
Preliminary data indicates that female voter participation (85.96%) slightly exceeded that of male voters (84.80%), while the turnout for third-gender voters was recorded at 36.84%.
