New Delhi, July 21: Former Indian off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin has voiced his support for Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli amidst ongoing discussions about their futures in cricket. Ashwin emphasized that these seasoned players have the right to decide when to retire from the sport.
Following Rohit’s impressive 138-run innings in the decisive match against England at Lord’s, Ashwin stated that as long as these two legends wish to represent India, they should not be sidelined from the team.
On his YouTube channel, Ashwin remarked, “If they want to play, no one can touch Virat and Rohit. This is due to their outstanding records. Rohit has scored nearly 12,000 runs. No one can replace him. They are exceptional batsmen with a massive fan following. If you drop them, there will be a huge uproar.”
Praising Rohit’s batting, Ashwin noted that once Rohit settled into his innings, he appeared completely in control and could have potentially scored even more. “His innings was remarkable. After playing a pull shot off Josh Tongue’s delivery, he looked set. If he had been in a slightly better position or more confident, he could have scored 180 runs and led the team to victory. I felt Rohit was in great form,” Ashwin added.
He further stated, “Given his current form and the way he batted, it’s not difficult for him. We have seen him for so many years. There’s no need to prove anything now. Who does he need to prove it to? It’s simply a matter of his inner desire to play in the World Cup, which drives him to continue.”
Ashwin concluded by saying that Rohit’s motivation to play now is not to respond to critics or prove his capabilities, but rather his own aspiration to participate in the upcoming ODI World Cup.
