Mumbai, February 27: Just two weeks after the initial release of Android 17 beta, Google has unveiled the second beta update. This version introduces a limited-access contacts picker, the EyeDropper API, improved connectivity, and enhanced cross-device capabilities. One of the standout features is the new Bubbles functionality, allowing users to transform any app into a floating bubble for easier multitasking.

Android 17 Beta 2: Key Updates and Changes

Bubbles Enhance Multitasking

The Bubbles feature enables users to convert any app into a floating bubble. This functionality is perfect for multitasking, allowing multiple floating apps to run simultaneously without exiting the full-screen app.

To utilize this feature, simply long-press an app icon to reveal the “Bubble” option. Tapping it opens the app in a floating window, which then shrinks into a floating circle that remains on top. On larger devices, a dedicated bubble bar appears in the taskbar to help organize and anchor these bubbles.

Return of the Pixel Launcher Search Bar

In this update, the Pixel Launcher brings back the ring around the search bar, which was removed in Beta 1. The search bar now showcases a color that matches the user’s wallpaper, with the AI Mode icon positioned within the circle at the end of the bar, as noted by Phone Arena.

Revamped Privacy Indicators

Android 17 Beta 2 also features minor design enhancements for privacy indicators. Previously, when an app accessed the camera, location, or microphone, icons appeared in a pill-shaped green enclosure in the top-right corner. In this beta, they are displayed in separate circles, with the location icon now appearing in blue instead of green.

Minor Yet Significant Upgrades

  • New Satellite Tile in Quick Settings: The Quick Settings menu now includes a “Satellite” tile displaying the current status.
  • System Contacts Picker: This new feature provides temporary, session-based read access to specific data fields selected by the user. It also allows users to choose between personal and work profiles for better data control.
  • System EyeDropper: The EyeDropper API allows apps to request a color from any pixel on the screen without needing sensitive screen-capture permissions.
  • Updated “Accounts and Backup” Menu: This new menu replaces the previous “Back up or copy data” and “Passwords, passkeys & accounts” sections.
  • SMS and OTP Protection: For non-receipt apps, OTP messages will be delayed for three hours. This does not apply to the default SMS app, assistant apps, or companion apps for connected devices.

This change affects:

  • WebOTP messages
  • SMS Retriever format messages
  • Standard OTP SMS messages

In addition to these updates, Android 17 Beta 2 enhances connectivity and cross-device functionality while addressing 16 issues. A complete changelog is available for review.
