
Visakhapatnam, October 6 (Daily Kiran) : A constable from the Andhra Pradesh police sustained injuries on October 6 due to an accidental discharge of his service rifle. The incident occurred at INS Dega during a security detail for Defense Minister Rajnath Singh, who was visiting Visakhapatnam.
The armed reserve constable, Appalakonda, was stationed to ensure the safety of Singh’s aircraft when the self-loading rifle accidentally went off, causing serious injuries to his lower left chest. Upon hearing the gunfire, fellow officers and security personnel rushed to the scene, finding the constable unconscious. He was quickly transported to a nearby hospital, where he is currently receiving treatment. Medical staff are closely monitoring his condition.
Senior officials visited the site to assess the situation. An investigation has been launched to determine the circumstances surrounding the accidental discharge of the rifle.
During his visit, Defense Minister Singh inaugurated the Fleet Support Ship-1 at Hindustan Shipyard Limited and laid the foundation for Fleet Support Ship-5. He also opened the advanced Slipway-4 and a 300-ton capacity Goliath crane. Earlier, Singh interacted with naval personnel during a ‘Badhakhan’ program. Following the events in Visakhapatnam, he traveled to Koraput, Odisha, to inaugurate a second power engine manufacturing unit at Hindustan Aeronautics Limited.
The ceremony in Visakhapatnam was attended by several dignitaries, including Admiral Krishna Swaminathan, Andhra Pradesh’s Infrastructure Minister Janardhan Reddy, and senior officials from the Indian Navy and Ministry of Defence.
