New Delhi, September 22 (Daily Kiran) : Anant Chaturdashi holds special significance in Hinduism. This year, the festival will be celebrated on September 25, 2026, which falls on a Friday. The auspicious time for worship will be from 6:28 AM to 11:06 PM. On this day, devotees honor Lord Vishnu in his infinite form, marking the conclusion of the Ganesh Festival.
Observing the Anant Chaturdashi fast is believed to bring endless joy and absolve one of sins. According to tradition, devotees tie the Anant Sutra, which consists of 14 knots symbolizing the connection to the 14 worlds, to seek protection from troubles. The festival’s origins trace back to the time when the Pandavas, having lost their kingdom, were advised by Lord Krishna to observe this fast. Following the rituals, they tied the Anant Sutra and were freed from their hardships.
On Anant Chaturdashi, devotees are encouraged to take a holy bath and resolve to observe the fast. Ideally, the rituals should be performed by the banks of a sacred river or lake. If this is not possible, one can set up a clean space at home. A pot, or kalash, is placed on the altar with an image or idol of Lord Vishnu reclining on the serpent Sheshnag. The Anant Sutra, adorned with 14 knots, is placed before the deity. The worship involves chanting the mantra “Om Anantayanam” and performing the Shodashopachara rituals. After the prayers, men should tie the Anant Sutra on their right wrist, while women should do so on their left. Following this, offerings of food should be made to a Brahmin, after which families can partake in the prasadam.
Additionally, Anant Chaturdashi marks the conclusion of the ten-day Ganesh Festival, during which idols of Lord Ganesh are immersed in water bodies. This year, the immersion of Ganesh idols will coincide with the worship of Lord Vishnu and the tying of the Anant Sutra.
