Allegations of Bias and Irregularities Raise Concerns Over DU Student Union Elections
Allegations of irregularities in DU student elections prompt calls for a transparent investigation from Congress leaders.

New Delhi, September 19 (Daily Kiran) : The recent results of the Delhi University Student Union (DUSU) elections have sparked controversy, with the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) securing three seats while the National Students’ Union of India (NSUI) failed to win any. Following this outcome, Devendra Yadav, president of the Delhi Pradesh Congress Committee, has raised serious concerns about alleged irregularities and discrimination against candidates.
Yadav emphasized that student union elections should embody democratic values and fairness. However, complaints regarding the election process have cast doubt on the university administration’s integrity. Allegations have surfaced that NSUI candidates were denied campaigning opportunities in certain college campuses, while ABVP candidates were reportedly given preferential access to campaign spaces. This raises significant questions about equal opportunity and the fairness of the electoral process.
Additionally, there have been reports of candidates being allowed to campaign despite violating the guidelines set by the Lyngdoh Committee. Some candidates allegedly did not meet the university’s established criteria yet were permitted to promote their campaigns.
Yadav further questioned the use of university infrastructure for ABVP meetings, suggesting this may violate the election code of conduct. Concerns about the transparency of electronic voting machines (EVMs) and vote counting processes also need to be addressed by the university administration. Ignoring issues related to students’ democratic rights and the credibility of the elections is not an option.
He has called for a fair, independent, and transparent investigation into all complaints related to the DUSU elections. Yadav insisted that uniform rules must apply to all candidates and student organizations. The university administration must clarify why electoral regulations seem to differ for various groups.
Yadav concluded by stressing the importance of preserving democratic processes, ensuring that all candidates and student organizations receive equal opportunities and resources in accordance with established rules and the election code of conduct.
