Prayagraj, March 23: The Allahabad High Court is set to hold a crucial hearing regarding a case involving a group prayer conducted inside a private residence in Bareilly. The District Magistrate (DM) and Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) of Bareilly have been summoned to appear in court today.
In the previous hearing, the court explicitly ordered both officials to attend. The court has warned that if they fail to appear on March 23, non-bailable warrants (NBWs) will be issued against them.
This case stems from a petition filed by Tariq Khan, who alleges that police intervened during the group prayer at his home and subsequently arrested participants. Khan claims that this action was illegal and unconstitutional.
The High Court has previously clarified that no administrative permission is required for prayer in private premises. Despite this, actions were taken against Khan and others. The court has adopted a strict stance on the police’s behavior, stating that administrative officials must comply with court orders.
In the last hearing, the Allahabad High Court mandated the DM and SSP to appear in court on March 23. Should they fail to do so today, the court may take a stern approach and issue non-bailable warrants against them.
It is noteworthy that on a Friday, members of the Muslim community gathered to pray in a private house in Bareilly. A complaint was lodged by a Hindu organization, leading the police to file a case and arrest the worshippers. However, actions against individuals praying in a private space are not permissible.
