Aishwarya Rai: From Aspiring Architect to Miss World and Bollywood Icon
Aishwarya Rai transitioned from architecture to becoming Miss World and a celebrated Bollywood actress, making a lasting impact in cinema.
Mumbai, October 31 (Daily Kiran) : Aishwarya Rai Bachchan has carved a unique niche in Bollywood, captivating audiences with her beauty and acting prowess. Born on November 1, 1973, in Mangalore, Karnataka, she initially aspired to be an architect, even beginning her studies in the field. However, fate had other plans, leading her into the glamorous world of modeling and acting.
Her journey took a significant turn after she won the Miss World title, which opened the doors to the film industry. Aishwarya’s family moved to Mumbai, where she completed her education. Her father, Krishnaraj Rai, was a marine engineer, and her mother, Vrinda Rai, is a writer. She also has an elder brother, Aditya, who worked in the merchant navy.
While studying architecture, Aishwarya developed an interest in modeling, landing several advertising gigs. A notable cold drink advertisement featuring Aamir Khan and Mahima Chaudhary catapulted her into the spotlight, particularly for her memorable line, “Hi, I’m Sanjana.”
In 1994, Aishwarya participated in the Miss India contest, finishing as the first runner-up to Sushmita Sen. She later represented India at the Miss World competition, winning the title and rapidly gaining popularity while still in her second year of architecture studies.
Despite her initial intent to continue her education, the opportunities in film were too tempting. Aishwarya made her acting debut in 1997 with Mani Ratnam’s Tamil film “Iruvar,” followed by her first Hindi film “Aur Pyaar Ho Gaya” the same year. Although her early films didn’t achieve significant success, the 1998 Tamil film “Jeans” established her in South Indian cinema.
Her breakthrough came in 1999 with Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s “Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam,” where her performance alongside Salman Khan and Ajay Devgn earned her critical acclaim and a Filmfare Best Actress award. The 2002 film “Devdas” further elevated her career, showcasing her talent alongside Shahrukh Khan and Madhuri Dixit, and securing her another Filmfare award for Best Actress.
Aishwarya has not only worked in Hindi films but has also appeared in Tamil, Bengali, and English films. She has been a prominent figure at the Cannes Film Festival, serving on the jury in 2003. In recognition of her contributions to cinema, she received the Padma Shri from the Government of India in 2009 and was honored with the Order of Arts and Letters by the French government.
On the personal front, Aishwarya married actor Abhishek Bachchan on April 20, 2007, after meeting during their film projects. Their daughter, Aaradhya, was born in November 2011. Despite the demands of her film career, Aishwarya has successfully balanced her professional and family responsibilities, continuing to shine both on and off the screen.
