Discover the inspiring journey of Padmini Kolhapure, who rose from chorus singer to a celebrated actress in Bollywood.

Mumbai, October 31 (Daily Kiran) : Padmini Kolhapure has made a significant mark in Hindi cinema, evolving from a child artist to a renowned actress. Born on November 1, 1965, in Mumbai, she began her career at a young age. Her father, Pandit Pandharinath Kolhapure, was involved in classical music, while her mother, Anupama, worked in the airline industry. Growing up in a family steeped in music and art, Padmini developed a passion for singing and dancing early on.

At just seven years old, Padmini started working in films, initially singing in the chorus alongside her sister, Shivangi Kolhapure. Their voices graced songs in films like “Yaadon Ki Baaraat,” “Kitaab,” and “Dushman Dosti.” It was during this time that she met legendary singer Asha Bhosle, who is her aunt. Padmini affectionately referred to her as “Asha Atya.”

In an interview, Padmini recounted how Asha Bhosle introduced her to the famous actor Dev Anand, encouraging him to consider her for a role. This meeting led to Padmini landing her first film role in Anand’s “Ishq Ishq Ishq.” At that young age, she had no inkling of the successful career that lay ahead.

Padmini gained recognition for her performances in films such as “Zindagi,” “Dream Girl,” and “Satyam Shivam Sundaram.” Her portrayal of Rupa in Raj Kapoor’s “Satyam Shivam Sundaram” earned her considerable acclaim. The filmmaker later cast her in a lead role in “Prem Rog,” where she played the character of Manorama, a widow facing societal challenges.

Her role in the 1980 film “Insaaf Ka Tarazu” garnered significant praise, earning her the Filmfare Award for Best Supporting Actress at just 15 years old. Two years later, she received the Filmfare Award for Best Actress for her work in “Prem Rog,” marking a major milestone in her early career.

Padmini continued to shine with roles in films like “Aahista Aahista,” “Vidhaata,” “Wo Saat Din,” and “Pyaar Jhukta Nahin.” She also made her mark in Marathi cinema. After a brief hiatus, she returned to acting with films such as “Chimni Pakhar,” “Fata Poster Nikla Hero,” “Panipat,” and “Pravaas.”

On the personal front, Padmini married filmmaker Pradeep Sharma in 1986. They have a son, Priyank Sharma, who is also involved in acting and film production. Padmini Kolhapure’s journey from a chorus singer to a celebrated actress is a testament to her talent and resilience in the ever-evolving landscape of Bollywood.
