Rajkot, May 23: The All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) in Rajkot is rapidly becoming a significant medical hub for the people of Saurashtra. Patients can access free treatment for serious illnesses, with 22 specialties and 6 super specialties available under one roof.
AIIMS Rajkot, sprawling over approximately 200 acres, was inaugurated in December 2020, with its super-specialty hospital opening in February 2024. Since then, it has been providing state-of-the-art and affordable healthcare services.
Patient Mayuri Morjaria shared her experience, stating she came for dental treatment, which costs only 10 rupees. She praised the supportive staff, noting that treatment at private hospitals would have been far more expensive. Another patient, Shraddha, emphasized that AIIMS offers better treatment at lower costs, calling it the best hospital for them.
Statistics reveal that AIIMS Rajkot performs around 180 critical surgeries each month. In 2024, the hospital conducted 861 operations, which surged to 1,927 in 2025. Equipped with modern modular operation theaters and life support systems, the facility now handles complex surgeries, including neurosurgery and urology. This world-class medical infrastructure means patients from surrounding districts no longer need to travel to Ahmedabad or other major cities for treatment.
Dr. L.N. Dorairajan, Executive Director of AIIMS Rajkot, highlighted the benefits for patients from Saurashtra. Previously, patients from Dwarka, Porbandar, or Junagadh had to travel to Ahmedabad or Vadodara. Now, they can receive super specialty treatment right in Rajkot.
The implementation of an electronic medical record system developed by C-DAC allows patients to access their previous reports and treatment histories with a single click, eliminating the need to carry physical files. Additionally, AIIMS offers all diagnostic and laboratory facilities, including CT scans and 3 Tesla MRIs, at affordable prices.
The Executive Director noted that modern diagnostic facilities are readily available. Patients only need to obtain a card for 10 rupees, granting them consultations with doctors across any department for a year. In cases of accidents or severe conditions, patients receive completely free treatment for the first 24 hours. AIIMS Rajkot is also making strides in medical education, increasing MBBS seats from 50 to 75 for the academic year 2025-26. Having gained the trust of over 850,000 patients, AIIMS Rajkot has become a lifeline for middle-class and low-income families.
