Ahmedabad, May 7: The Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) is set to conduct a significant vaccination campaign across the city today. This initiative is part of a program aimed at preventing cervical cancer among adolescent girls through the Human Papillomavirus (HPV) vaccine.
Girls aged 14 to 15 will receive the HPV vaccine free of charge at all urban health centers and municipal hospitals. Eligible beneficiaries can access the vaccine without any fees, as part of a broader health initiative in the city.
According to AMC officials, the goal is to vaccinate 48,561 adolescent girls under this program. So far, 22,137 girls have already received the vaccine. Previous campaigns on April 24 and April 30 successfully vaccinated 1,933 and 2,872 girls, respectively.
The AMC noted that the HPV vaccine typically costs around ₹3,000 in private hospitals, including consultation fees. However, this government initiative aims to provide the vaccine for free to maximize public benefit.
Launched in February, the campaign also includes awareness programs. Efforts to promote the vaccine are being made through hoardings, banners, standees, radio jingles, and social media outreach.
The AMC has shared interviews and information from girls who have already been vaccinated to raise awareness and dispel misconceptions.
Official statistics indicate that the program aims to cover 562,324 adolescent girls across Gujarat, with 506,100 girls vaccinated so far.
The AMC has involved local representatives, community leaders, and both government and private schools to reach as many girls as possible.
Officials state that this initiative is based on medical research and international vaccination practices, where the HPV vaccine is recognized as effective in preventing cervical cancer.
The vaccination campaign will continue until May 30, during which eligible girls aged 14 to 15 can visit designated health centers in Ahmedabad to receive the vaccine for free.
