Afghanistan Climbs to Sixth in ICC ODI Rankings for the First Time

Afghanistan secures sixth place in ICC ODI rankings, marking a historic achievement in international cricket.

Dubai, November 2 (Daily Kiran) : Afghanistan has made history by reaching sixth place in the ICC Men’s ODI Team Rankings for the first time. This significant leap has seen them surpass Sri Lanka and reflects the team’s rapid progress since entering international ODI cricket in 2009.

With 96 wins out of 191 matches, Afghanistan’s consistent performance in the ODI format has been commendable. Their rise as a formidable team is evident in major international tournaments. Notably, during the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup 2023, Afghanistan achieved historic victories against teams like Pakistan and Sri Lanka, demonstrating their ability to challenge more experienced sides on the global stage.

The team’s advancement is not limited to ODIs. They also made headlines by reaching the semifinals of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2024 for the first time. Recent results have further solidified Afghanistan’s position, as they completed a clean sweep against Ireland, winning the series 4-0. They also triumphed in a triangular series against Zimbabwe and Bangladesh, remaining unbeaten.

In their latest T20 series, Afghanistan secured a clean sweep against Zimbabwe, winning 3-0.

Currently, India tops the ICC ODI rankings with 115 rating points, followed by New Zealand at 109. South Africa and Pakistan are tied at 104 rating points, while Australia holds fifth place with 102 points. Afghanistan sits at sixth with 94 rating points, just ahead of Sri Lanka, also at 94 points. England, Bangladesh, and the West Indies follow in eighth, ninth, and tenth places, respectively.
