Delhi High Court Grants Interim Relief to Congress MP Bimol Akoijam Amid Dismissal Controversy

The Delhi High Court has temporarily halted the dismissal of Congress MP Bimol Akoijam from JNU, pending further investigation.

New Delhi, November 2 (Daily Kiran) : The Delhi High Court has provided significant relief to Congress MP Bimol Akoijam by placing an interim stay on his dismissal from Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU). This ruling comes as he faces allegations of sexual harassment from multiple students. The stay allows Akoijam to remain in his position while the court deliberates on the matter.

Akoijam was dismissed by the JNU administration following an internal inquiry into the harassment claims, which were substantiated by the university’s complaint committee. The Vice-Chancellor issued the dismissal order based on this report. In response, Akoijam challenged the decision in court, asserting that the allegations are part of a conspiracy against him.

In light of the court’s decision, Akoijam has also filed for anticipatory bail at Rouse Avenue Court, with a hearing scheduled for November 3. He has been accused by eleven female students during his tenure as a professor at JNU, leading to a First Information Report (FIR) filed by the Delhi police, which is currently under investigation.

Earlier in October, Akoijam appeared at the Vasant Kunj North police station in compliance with a summons, stating his intention to fully cooperate with the investigation. He emphasized that he did not want his absence to be interpreted as an attempt to evade inquiry.

Describing the case as politically motivated, Akoijam expressed confidence in the truth prevailing and urged that the legal process be allowed to unfold. He likened the university’s actions to those of a “khap panchayat,” a reference to traditional village councils in India known for their controversial judgments.

The BJP’s Mahila Morcha has also taken an interest in the case, meeting with Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla to demand stringent action against Akoijam. Led by national president Rupakumari Chaudhary, the delegation called for a swift and impartial investigation into the allegations.

As the investigation continues, all eyes are on the outcome of Akoijam’s anticipatory bail plea, despite the temporary relief granted by the Delhi High Court.
