Mumbai, March 18: Abu Azmi, a leader of the Samajwadi Party, has spoken out against the arrest of several Muslim youths who allegedly discarded remnants of biryani into the Ganges during an iftar party. He criticized the arrests, asserting that the youths did nothing wrong.
In an interview with a news agency on Wednesday, Azmi stated that some individuals are attempting to target the Muslim community due to political bias, which he firmly rejects.
He emphasized that the current atmosphere in the country reflects a complete lack of tolerance. “The entire ecosystem seems to be focused on one community, aiming to eliminate it by any means necessary,” he remarked.
Azmi noted that during iftar, people gather outside their homes to enjoy delicious dishes, whether in gardens, restaurants, or among friends. He expressed disappointment that political reactions are now emerging from this situation, which he believes should not be tolerated.
When asked about objections to the biryani remnants being thrown into the Ganges, Azmi responded, “The Ganges belongs to Muslims as well. The current state of the river is well-known. My direct question is to those making a fuss: Is the Ganges clean today?”
He stressed the importance of recognizing that the Ganges is a shared heritage. Reflecting on his childhood in Allahabad, he recalled bathing in the river himself.
