AAPs Candidate Count Drops to 32 for Gandhinagar Municipal Elections

Gandhinagar, September 29 (Daily Kiran) : The number of candidates from the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) for the Gandhinagar Municipal Corporation (GMC) elections has decreased from 41 to 32. This reduction follows the rejection of four nominations and the withdrawal of five candidates.

Praveen Ram, the state president of AAP, accused the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and Congress of pressuring five of their candidates to withdraw their nominations. He alleged that both parties collaborated to intimidate AAP, which he claims cannot be controlled or frightened.

As a result of this situation, AAP now has 32 candidates contesting for the 44 seats across 11 wards in the municipal body. Initially, the party had announced 29 candidates, but by the nomination deadline on September 26, the number had risen to 41.

Following a review on September 28, four of AAP’s nominations were rejected, and on the final day for withdrawals, five candidates stepped back, bringing the total down to 32.

Ram suggested that these withdrawals are part of a broader conspiracy between the BJP and Congress, citing the recent defection of two Congress councilors to the BJP after the last GMC elections as evidence of their collusion.

According to the Gujarat State Election Commission’s schedule, voting for the GMC elections will take place on October 11. The counting of votes is set for October 13, with October 12 reserved for any necessary re-polling.

The nomination process began on September 21 with the election notification, followed by the final date for nominations on September 26, the last date for scrutiny on September 28, and withdrawals on September 29.
