New Delhi, March 10: In Ayurveda, food is not merely a means to fill the stomach; it is considered a fundamental basis for maintaining balance in both body and mind. Therefore, Ayurveda outlines several rules regarding food that can help us stay healthy for a long time.

The first rule is to recognize your food. Each person’s body is unique, so consume only what suits your body and makes you feel light and energized after eating.

The second important rule is to always eat with a cheerful mind. Avoid eating when you are angry, stressed, or anxious. Food consumed in such mental states does not digest well and can lead to indigestion, gas, or other digestive issues. Ayurveda also advises against eating without hunger. The digestive system activates only when the body genuinely feels hungry, allowing for proper digestion.

The third rule is to savor your food and eat slowly. Tasty and preferred meals bring joy to the mind, providing energy and satisfaction to the body.

The fourth rule is to always eat fresh and warm food. Try to consume meals within an hour of preparation, as fresh food digests quickly and offers more nutrition. Reheating food multiple times is not advisable, as it reduces the nutritional value.

Ayurveda also states that snacking continuously is not beneficial. It does not allow the digestive system to rest, gradually weakening digestion.

Dinner should always be light and consumed at least three hours before bedtime. A short walk after eating is also considered beneficial.

Another crucial rule is that meals should align with the season and location. For instance, warm and nutritious food is ideal in winter, while light and cooling meals are more beneficial in summer.

According to Ayurveda, food choices should be based on an individual’s constitution (the body’s structure). For example, those with obesity or diabetes should prefer foods like barley or coarse grains, which are deemed healthier.

For weak or ill individuals, liquid and light foods, such as porridge, soup, or rice water, are recommended. If someone has weak digestion, they should consume small amounts of light and easily digestible food.

Additionally, there are certain foods to avoid, such as eating yogurt at night, which is better consumed during the day. Drinking large amounts of water just before or immediately after meals is also discouraged. If thirsty, small sips during meals are acceptable.
