Bijapur, March 22: A significant initiative has emerged in Bijapur district of Chhattisgarh aimed at integrating surrendered Maoists into mainstream society. According to a press release issued by the district police on Sunday, 85 surrendered Maoist cadres participated in a ‘basic literacy’ examination.
This initiative is part of the Ullas Nav Bharat Literacy Program, which is aligned with the National Education Policy 2020. The program aims to teach reading and writing skills to those who have previously missed out on formal education, particularly individuals associated with Naxalite activities. The police administration noted that prior to this, 272 surrendered Naxalites had successfully completed this basic literacy training and are now living as ordinary citizens. Following this, 85 additional cadres have taken the exam after completing their training. All participants are receiving benefits under the ‘Naxal Surrender and Rehabilitation Policy,’ which includes assistance, vocational training, and rehabilitation support.
This initiative is being implemented under the Naxal Surrender and Rehabilitation Policy. Under this policy, surrendered Maoists are provided not only with financial assistance and rehabilitation facilities but also with employment-oriented training and educational opportunities.
The district police and administration emphasize their primary goal is to redirect misguided youth away from violence and towards education and development, empowering them with knowledge instead of weapons. Authorities state that through education, these young individuals are being transformed into self-reliant and socially responsible citizens.
Bijapur police have appealed to active Maoists in the district to abandon the path of violence, surrender, and take advantage of the government’s rehabilitation policy to start a peaceful and dignified life.
