Gaza, October 20 (Daily Kiran): Violence flared up again in Gaza on Sunday after two Israeli soldiers were killed in a militant ambush, prompting the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) to carry out a series of heavy retaliatory airstrikes. At least 45 people were killed in the attacks, according to local authorities.

The escalation has threatened to derail the ceasefire agreement that came into effect on October 10 between Israel and Hamas. The United States has stepped in diplomatically to prevent a complete breakdown of the truce.
According to a report by The Times of Israel, the latest clashes began early Sunday when Palestinian militant groups attacked Israeli soldiers in the Rafah area of southern Gaza, killing Major Yaniv Kula (26) and Staff Sergeant Itay Yavetz, and injuring three others.
In response, the IDF launched multiple air and ground strikes targeting Hamas positions across the region. An official statement from the Israeli military said the strikes were conducted under “political-level directives” and that Israel continues to honor the ceasefire but would retaliate firmly if attacked.
The IDF said it struck 20 locations linked to Hamas. Gaza’s civil defense agency confirmed 45 deaths in the bombings. Israeli officials claimed that Hamas fighters remain hidden in active underground tunnels, using the ceasefire to regroup and carry out surprise attacks.
Following the attack, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu held an emergency meeting with Defense Minister Israel Katz and senior military officials, during which it was decided that Israel would launch a strong counter-operation against Hamas.
Meanwhile, in Washington, U.S. President Donald Trump’s administration has intensified efforts to keep the fragile truce intact. As reported by Axios, U.S. Special Envoy for the Middle East Steve Witkoff and Trump’s advisor and son-in-law Jared Kushner have spoken with Israel’s Strategic Affairs Minister Ron Dermer regarding the situation. Both Witkoff and Kushner are expected to visit Israel on Monday, followed by a trip by U.S. Vice President JD Vance on Tuesday.
The situation remains tense, with the potential for further escalation if violations of the ceasefire continue.
