Kolkata, September 2: A group of 31 Bangladeshi migrants recently arrested by police in Bengaluru has been transported to Malda district in West Bengal.
Currently, this group is being held at a temporary detention center near the Bangladesh border. Legal procedures for their return to Bangladesh have commenced, and they are expected to be handed over to the Border Security Force (BSF) for repatriation.
According to sources, the Karnataka police apprehended the 31 Bangladeshi nationals, who allegedly lacked valid documentation to prove their legal status in India. Police reports indicate that these individuals entered India illegally through the international border with Bangladesh while seeking employment in Bengaluru.
Reports suggest that these migrants were arrested approximately three months ago and subsequently placed in a detention center in Bengaluru. After completing the necessary procedures for their transfer, a team from the Karnataka police brought them to Malda.
An officer from the Malda district police stated that the Karnataka police team arrived at Malda Town Station late Tuesday night with the 31 detainees. They were later handed over to the West Bengal police, who transported them to a detention center in the district.
The 31 Bangladeshis were transferred from Bengaluru to Malda under special surveillance, accompanied by a team of 20 Karnataka police personnel during the journey.
These arrests were part of a special operation conducted by the Karnataka police to identify suspected illegal migrants. Dubbed ‘Operation Mukti’, this initiative began on August 9, during which the documents of 2,944 individuals were verified. The police identified 105 Bangladeshi nationals as suspected illegal migrants, with 31 being arrested in Bengaluru.
Authorities have confirmed that the process for repatriating these 31 illegal migrants to Bangladesh has begun. Once the necessary formalities are completed, they will be handed over to the BSF, which is responsible for securing the international border with Bangladesh.
Union Home Minister Amit Shah has repeatedly called for stringent measures against illegal immigration, emphasizing the need to identify and deport individuals entering India without valid documents.
Since the Bharatiya Janata Party came to power in West Bengal in May, the state administration has intensified monitoring and actions against suspected illegal Bangladeshi migrants. Several detention centers have also been established in border areas for the temporary holding of apprehended individuals.
Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari has adopted a ‘zero tolerance’ stance on the issue of illegal immigration, and officials continue their efforts to identify and take action against suspected infiltrators.
