Xi Jinping Meets UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer to Strengthen Bilateral Ties

Beijing: Chinese President Xi Jinping met with British Prime Minister Keir Starmer at the Great Hall of the People in Beijing during the latter’s official visit to China. Both leaders agreed on the need to develop a long-term, stable, and comprehensive strategic partnership between China and the United Kingdom.

President Xi highlighted the complexity and volatility of the current international situation. As permanent members of the United Nations Security Council and major global economies, China and the UK must enhance dialogue and cooperation to maintain world peace and stability, while promoting economic development and improving the living standards of their peoples.

Xi Jinping emphasised that mutual trust forms the foundation for stable and long-term relations between countries. He stated that China has always pursued peaceful development, never initiated war, nor occupied any part of another country’s territory. Regardless of its growth and strength, China will never pose a threat to other nations.

Prime Minister Starmer expressed his pleasure at being the first British Prime Minister in eight years to visit China. He noted that his delegation, comprising over 60 representatives from key British industries, trade, culture, and other sectors, reflected the broad scope of UK-China cooperation and the UK’s commitment to deepening and expanding its partnership with China.

Regarding the Taiwan issue, Starmer reaffirmed that the UK’s long-term policy remains unchanged and will continue to do so. The UK is eager to maintain high-level exchanges with China, engage in close dialogue and communication, and strengthen cooperation in areas such as trade, investment, finance, and environmental protection. This collaboration aims to support each other’s economic growth and benefit the peoples of both countries.
