World Space Week 2026: Celebrating the Legacy of Sputnik-1 and Its Role in Climate Action

New Delhi, October 4 (Daily Kiran) : World Space Week 2026 kicks off this Sunday, October 4, in New Delhi. The United Nations has marked the occasion with a special post on its official social media account, emphasizing the significance of space-derived data in combating climate change and managing disasters.

According to the UN Office for Outer Space Affairs (UNOOSA), efforts are underway to harness space technology for a more sustainable future.

The General Assembly first announced World Space Week on December 6, 1999. This annual event is the largest global celebration of space, aimed at inspiring students and preparing the workforce of the future. It also showcases public support for space programs, educates people about space activities, and promotes international cooperation in space awareness and education.

Each year, the World Space Week Association collaborates with the UN Office for Outer Space Affairs to select a theme that guides participants in their programming. This year’s theme, “Rocket Revolution,” aims to enhance the event’s global impact by fostering a unified focus among all participants. World Space Week 2026 will be celebrated worldwide from October 4 to October 10.

The journey of space exploration began on October 4, 1957, with the launch of Sputnik-1, the first human-made satellite. A decade later, on October 10, 1967, a treaty was enacted to regulate activities in outer space, including the exploration and use of celestial bodies.

Today, space science and technology play a crucial role in numerous UN initiatives. At least 25 UN agencies and the World Bank regularly utilize space applications, significantly contributing to the UN’s work. This includes implementing recommendations from major global conferences and supporting the peaceful exploration and use of outer space, as well as sustainable development goals.
