World Divided Over US Action in Venezuela

New Delhi: The global community is split into two groups over the recent US action against Venezuela. While several countries have strongly condemned the United States, others have openly supported its move. Here is a look at which countries stand with the US and which oppose it.

Countries including Russia, China, Iran, Cuba, Brazil, Mexico, Colombia, Chile, Belarus, Uruguay, Slovakia, South Africa, Malaysia, Sri Lanka, North Korea, Ghana, and Singapore have criticised the US action. These nations have described the move as a violation of international law. Notably, the US action has also faced criticism within the United States itself, particularly from the Trump administration.

On the other hand, Argentina, Israel, Peru, El Salvador, Ecuador, Albania, France, and the United Kingdom have expressed their support for the US action against Venezuela.

Regarding India’s stance, the Ministry of External Affairs issued a statement calling on both countries to resolve the issue peacefully. The statement said, “The recent developments in Venezuela are a matter of serious concern. India is closely monitoring the evolving situation. We remain fully committed to the welfare and safety of the people of Venezuela. We appeal to all parties involved to resolve matters through dialogue to maintain peace and stability in the region. The Indian embassy in Caracas is in contact with the Indian community and is providing all possible assistance.”

Italy’s Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni said, “I have been watching the early changes in Venezuela’s developments. Italy, along with its main international partners, has never recognised Maduro’s self-declared electoral victory, condemned the government’s repressive actions, and consistently supported the Venezuelan people’s hope for democratic change.”

She added, “Following Italy’s longstanding position, the government believes that external military intervention is not the right path to end authoritarian rule. However, intervention is justified as a defensive measure against hybrid attacks, such as those involving state institutions that promote and support drug trafficking. We are paying special attention to the Italian community in Venezuela, whose safety is our highest priority.”

Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese appealed to both sides to engage in dialogue to resolve the situation. He stated, “The Australian government is closely monitoring the developments in Venezuela. We urge all parties to support dialogue and diplomacy to maintain stability and prevent escalation of tensions. Australia has long been concerned about the situation in Venezuela, including the need to respect democratic principles, human rights, and fundamental freedoms.”

He further emphasised, “We will continue to support international law and peaceful democratic change that reflects the will of the Venezuelan people. Australians in Venezuela requiring assistance can contact the 24/7 emergency consular assistance team at +61262613305 from anywhere in the world or 1300555135 within Australia.”
