Tel Aviv, March 8: On International Women’s Day, the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) released statistics highlighting the achievements and service of women during Operation ‘Roaring Lion’, amidst ongoing tensions with Iran.
Women have been serving in the IDF since its inception, making significant contributions to the military. Today, they are an integral part of the IDF’s operational activities during the ‘Roaring Lion’ campaign.
In recent years, the IDF has implemented various processes aimed at expanding the range of combat roles available to women. Currently, over 90% of positions in the IDF are open to women, with nearly 20% of the combat forces comprised of female soldiers. Throughout various conflicts, these women have showcased professionalism, determination, and excellence, significantly contributing to the war efforts.
With the launch of Operation ‘Roaring Lion’, several reserve forces have been mobilized, and approximately 20% of all currently serving reservists are women. The physical, mental, and professional well-being of female combat soldiers is a guiding principle in every decision made by the IDF. The organization works to maximize the capabilities of its military personnel while ensuring necessary adjustments for their health and safety.
The IDF reported that in 2015, the percentage of women in combat roles was 7.2%, which has now risen to 21.2% a decade later, marking a threefold increase. By 2025, it is projected that women will make up about 35% of all permanent service personnel. Currently, women hold approximately 24% of lieutenant colonel positions and around 15% of colonel positions.
During Operation ‘Roaring Lion’, about 25 female commanders have graduated from the naval officer course, and around 130 female naval combat soldiers are actively engaged in missions aboard missile ships. In the naval sector, approximately 40% of personnel in intelligence, planning, command, and artillery roles are women. Additionally, nearly 50% of personnel in air defense units are female. During this operation, around 5,000 female reservists are serving in the air force, with over 40% of combat soldiers in the electronic warfare battalion of the Sayeret (Spear) Brigade being women.
