Woman Alleges Drug Abuse by Husband During Punjabs Anti-Drug Campaign in Ludhiana

A woman claims her husband has been using and selling drugs for a decade, highlighting the urgent need for action against drug abuse in Punjab.

Ludhiana, September 25 (Daily Kiran) : A woman in Ludhiana has made serious allegations against her husband during the Bharatiya Janata Party’s (BJP) “Nasha Mukat Punjab Yatra,” claiming he has been abusing and selling drugs for nearly ten years. Despite her repeated complaints to the police, she accused them of failing to take action.

Varsha, a resident of Manohar Nagar, spoke to reporters during the campaign on Friday. She stated, “My husband has been using and selling drugs for the past 10 years.” She further claimed that whenever she tried to speak out against him, her own family turned against her. When she approached the police for help, she alleged they took her into custody but did not act against her husband.

The event, held under the banner of “Mawan Mangdiyan Jawab” (Mothers Demand Answers), featured families who have lost loved ones to drug abuse. Balwinder Kaur, from Manjit Nagar, reported that around 50 people in her neighborhood have died due to drug use. She expressed her willingness to show journalists the ongoing drug sales in her area.

Another resident from Manohar Nagar revealed that 10 to 12 people have died from drug use in their locality. They claimed that the police have targeted those who speak out against drugs rather than those who sell them.

At the event, photographs of individuals who lost their lives to drugs were displayed on empty chairs, symbolizing the lives that could have been saved with effective action against drug abuse. Seventeen families from Ludhiana and the nearby town of Jagraon participated, including Shindo Bai, who shared that she lost four sons to drugs. Other families recounted similar losses of one or two loved ones.

These families urged for more robust measures to combat drug use and trafficking in Punjab. Punjab BJP President Keval Singh Dhillon acknowledged the pain of affected families, stating that it is impossible to fully articulate their suffering. He emphasized that the party’s “Nasha Mukat Punjab Yatra” would continue until September 30 to highlight this critical issue.

In Bhucho Mandi, residents halted Dhillon’s convoy to express their support for the BJP’s decisive campaign against drugs, urging the party to remain committed. Dhillon called for unity among the people of Punjab in the anti-drug movement, stating, “This is not a political exercise, but a public movement.” He reaffirmed the BJP’s commitment to eradicating drugs from Punjab, citing the party’s successes in tackling issues like Naxalism and gangsterism in India.

He concluded by appealing for community support in the efforts to make Punjab drug-free.
