New Delhi, July 28: West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari is set to meet 20 former Lok Sabha members of the Trinamool Congress (TMC) in New Delhi on Tuesday. These MPs had joined the National Citizens Party of India (NCPI) following the West Bengal Assembly elections.
This meeting comes at a critical time as the TMC is attempting to disqualify these MPs under the anti-defection law. The significance of this gathering is heightened by the fact that it occurs just a day after TMC’s national general secretary, Abhishek Banerjee, wrote to Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla, urging a swift resolution to the party’s disqualification petition against the MPs.
Although the Lok Sabha Speaker has yet to officially recognize the MPs’ switch to NCPI, arrangements for them to sit separately in the Lok Sabha have already been made. Previously, Abhishek Banerjee, along with TMC MPs Mahua Moitra and Kalyan Banerjee, met with Speaker Om Birla to demand the immediate disqualification of the rebel MPs.
According to sources, the meeting is scheduled to take place at Banga Bhavan in New Delhi. While the official agenda has not been disclosed, discussions are expected to revolve around issues related to West Bengal and parliamentary coordination. Sources connected to the matter indicated that effective utilization of the Members of Parliament Local Area Development (MPLAD) fund through better coordination with the state government could be a key topic.
A state BJP leader mentioned, “There may be discussions on which issues related to West Bengal these MPs will raise during the House’s monsoon session.”
