Volkswagen’s latest SUV offering, the Terra, is making headlines across global automotive circles for its impressive safety performance. Manufactured in Brazil and designed for Latin American and African markets, the Terra has already begun customer deliveries in Brazil. Recently, the SUV earned a full 5-star rating in the Latin NCAP crash tests — a strong testament to Volkswagen’s focus on occupant protection and vehicle integrity.
Outstanding Adult Occupant Safety
In the adult occupant protection category, the Volkswagen Terra scored an impressive 89.88%. Both the driver and front passenger received “good” ratings for head and neck protection in crash scenarios. While the passenger’s chest protection was also rated as good, the driver’s chest protection was deemed marginal — an area for potential refinement.
Both occupants’ tibia protection was strong, with the Terra’s bodyshell and footwell performing exceptionally well in managing frontal crash forces. In side impact tests, protection for the head, pelvis, and abdomen was rated highly, though chest protection remained good. Even in the more severe side pole impact scenario, the Terra maintained solid occupant safety, with only marginal chest ratings.
Child Occupant Safety: Designed with Families in Mind
The Terra also demonstrated strong family-friendly credentials, scoring 87.25% in child occupant protection. For both 1.5-year-old and 3-year-old dummy tests, the rear-facing ISOFIX child seats provided excellent head protection and full safety in side impacts, though chest protection remained somewhat limited. The ISOFIX anchor installation system earned full marks for its ease of use and effectiveness.
Pedestrian Safety: Complying with Global Standards
In pedestrian protection testing, the Terra achieved a commendable 75.77% and meets United Nations Regulation No. 127 for pedestrian safety. The hood delivered good to sufficient protection for head impacts across most zones, though scores dropped near the windshield and A-pillars. Upper leg protection ranged from sufficient to good, while lower leg impact zones performed well overall.
Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS) Boost Safety
One of the most notable aspects of the Volkswagen Terra is its well-rounded suite of driver assistance technologies, which helped it achieve 84.76% in the safety assist category. Standard features include electronic stability control (ESC) and seatbelt reminders for all seats.
Additionally, the Terra performed confidently in dynamic handling evaluations, completing the ADAC moose test up to 95 km/h and demonstrating good stability during consumer tests at 75 km/h.
Buyers can also opt for advanced ADAS features such as Lane Support System (LSS), Road Edge Detection (RED), and Blind Spot Detection (BSD), which further enhance the SUV’s ability to prevent accidents and protect occupants.
With its 5-star rating, solid structural engineering, and optional cutting-edge safety tech, the Volkswagen Terra is poised to become a top choice for buyers looking for a stylish and safe SUV in emerging global markets.
