Jaipur, February 21: The Congress party has appointed Vinod Jakhar as the new president of the National Students’ Union of India (NSUI). Jakhar has served as the state president of the Rajasthan University Students’ Union (RUSU) for the past two years.

In 2018, he made history by becoming the first Dalit president of RUSU after contesting as an independent candidate. His appointment as the national president marks a significant milestone, as it is the first time a student leader from Rajasthan’s desert region has taken on this role in the NSUI’s 55-year history.

This appointment is considered historic, especially since prominent Rajasthan Congress leaders like Ashok Gehlot and Sachin Pilot never reached the position of NSUI national president during their student political careers. Gehlot began his political journey as the state president of Rajasthan NSUI in 1974 and earned the nickname “Magician” over the years, but he never became the national president of the student organization.

Similarly, Sachin Pilot entered active politics through the Lok Sabha and later held significant roles in the Youth Congress and party organization, yet he also never led the NSUI at the national level. Other senior leaders, including former Union Minister Bhanu Jitendra Singh and CP Joshi, have also not held this position.

Jakhar’s promotion is viewed as a significant political achievement. His journey has been filled with struggles and determination. When the NSUI denied him a ticket in the 2018 Rajasthan University Students’ Union elections, he rebelled and contested as an independent candidate, achieving a historic victory.

Over time, the organization recognized his leadership skills and welcomed him back. He was later appointed as the state president of Rajasthan NSUI and has now emerged as one of the country’s top student leaders.

Hailing from a modest family in Virat Nagar near Jaipur, Jakhar’s father works as a mechanic. His rise to the top of NSUI without any political background or godfather is seen as an inspiring story for students across Rajasthan.

A widely circulated photo of Jakhar with Rahul Gandhi highlights his growing prominence within the party. Jakhar belongs to the Scheduled Caste (SC) category, and his appointment is viewed as a strategic move by the Congress leadership.

Observers believe this is an effort by Rahul Gandhi and Mallikarjun Kharge to strengthen their outreach among Dalit youth in Rajasthan and North India. Jakhar was also involved in a major protest against the RSS’s Shastra Poojan program at Rajasthan University, which led to his arrest.

This decision sends an organizational message that Congress is willing to promote grassroots workers to top positions, regardless of their political lineage.
