Vedanta Group Faces Scrutiny After Chhattisgarh Incident Raises Safety Concerns

New Delhi, April 16: The Vedanta Group, a leading mining company in India, is under intense scrutiny following a tragic incident at its Chhattisgarh plant where a boiler tube explosion resulted in the deaths of at least 14 employees and left several others severely injured.

This incident has reignited concerns over the company’s industrial safety practices. Under the leadership of Anil Agarwal, Vedanta has frequently been at the center of discussions regarding workplace safety, with reports of fatalities across its mining, metals, oil and gas, and power sectors over the years.

In a compilation by the London Stock Exchange in 2010, Vedanta Resources Limited was identified as a company with 67 fatalities, the highest among mining companies listed on the exchange at that time.

The repercussions of this latest incident have been significant, leading the British Safety Council to revoke a previously awarded safety accolade to the company and its subsidiary, BALCO.

In another grave incident in Korba, Chhattisgarh, the collapse of a chimney resulted in the deaths of 40 workers, prompting police to file involuntary manslaughter charges against company officials. The company attributed this incident to adverse weather conditions.

Recent reports indicate that safety concerns at Vedanta have not been adequately addressed. The number of workplace fatalities across all operational areas of the company increased from seven in the fiscal year 2020 to 13 in fiscal year 2023, before dropping slightly, only to rise again to seven in fiscal year 2025, which included six workers and one employee.

Comparative industry data also reveals that Vedanta is among the companies with a relatively high number of fatalities. The company’s annual report for fiscal year 2025 noted a significant rise in internal complaints related to workplace safety.

In fiscal year 2025, employees and workers filed 1,363 health and safety complaints, more than double the 603 complaints recorded in fiscal year 2024.

In response to the Chhattisgarh tragedy, Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed deep sorrow over the loss of life and announced a compensation of ₹200,000 for the families of each deceased and ₹50,000 for the injured from the Prime Minister’s National Relief Fund.

Chief Minister Vishnu Dev Sai also announced a compensation of ₹500,000 for the families of the deceased workers and ₹50,000 for the injured. He ordered the Commissioner of the Bilaspur division to investigate the incident.

The district administration has also mandated a separate magistrate inquiry into the accident. They have been instructed to ensure proper treatment for the injured and review safety standards.

The explosion occurred on April 14 at the company’s plant in Singhanatarai village, Shakti district, when a high-pressure boiler tube burst, releasing extremely hot steam at temperatures around 600 degrees Celsius, leading to multiple fatalities.
