Ranchi, October 10 (Daily Kiran) : Former Indian fast bowler Varun Aaron has raised concerns about the team’s bowling strategy following their defeat to West Indies in the second T20 International held in Ranchi. After West Indies successfully chased down a daunting target of 250 runs, Aaron noted that Indian bowlers deviated from their game plan when Shai Hope and Sherfane Rutherford initiated an aggressive batting display.
Aaron emphasized that instead of maintaining their line and length, the Indian bowlers hastily altered their strategy. He pointed out the importance of remaining patient and consistently applying pressure on the batsmen under such circumstances.
In an interview with ‘GeoStar’, Aaron remarked, “Shai Hope and Rutherford played exceptionally well. It was like a Batman and Robin partnership. Hope anchored the innings while Rutherford kept the runs flowing. They batted brilliantly, but after the first four or five overs, the Indian bowlers forgot how to bowl at the right length. I believe they panicked and made mistakes too quickly.”
Despite an initial breakthrough, the Indian team abandoned their plan to bowl consistently at one length. Mayank Yadav took two wickets in the first over and finished with three wickets, providing India with a chance to exert pressure on the visiting team. Aaron felt the bowlers could have capitalized better on this early advantage by sticking to their line and length instead of frequently experimenting with variations.
He stated, “They quickly started using yorkers, slower balls, bouncers, and wide deliveries. Mayank Yadav took three wickets, two of which came from balls bowled at the right length. Arshdeep should have followed suit, especially when Rovman Powell was struggling at the crease.”
Aaron further explained, “In his attempt to bowl yorkers, Arshdeep delivered some full tosses that resulted in boundaries, allowing Powell to build his innings. Given that Mayank had already taken two wickets early on, India should have remained consistent with their bowling line and length for a bit longer.”
West Indies, despite losing three wickets for just 58 runs, made a remarkable comeback. Hope and Rutherford turned the match around, with Hope scoring an unbeaten 102 runs off 45 balls and Rutherford contributing 84 runs from 37 balls. Their partnership of 120 runs laid the foundation for a successful chase.
Ultimately, West Indies set a record for the largest successful chase in T20 Internationals against India, finishing at 252/4 in just 18.3 overs, leveling the five-match series at 1-1. India had posted a total of 249/5, with Sanju Samson scoring 82 runs off 41 balls and Tilak Varma adding 44 runs.
