New Delhi, May 18: Former Indian cricketer Mohammad Kaif believes that 15-year-old prodigy Vaibhav Suryavanshi needs to enhance his fielding skills before he can play for the senior national men’s team.
In a recent match against Delhi Capitals, Rajasthan Royals faced a disappointing 5-wicket defeat. Suryavanshi’s poor fielding performance allowed DC’s batsmen to dominate, easily chasing down a target of 193 runs.
Speaking with JioHotstar, Kaif stated, “I think scouts should include fielding tests when evaluating players. They are doing a great job bringing in talented players, but I haven’t seen Suryavanshi take a single catch yet. If he wants to play for India, he must improve his fielding and pass the fielding test first.”
Kaif further explained, “The ball that came his way was at a good height. I understand that catching can be challenging when a batsman plays a flick shot, as it creates a blind spot, especially when the ball makes contact with the bat. However, the shot played by Sahil Parakh was at a good height for Suryavanshi.”
The former Indian cricketer emphasized that Suryavanshi is not yet fully prepared in terms of fielding. He remarked, “Suryavanshi positioned himself well to take that catch, but he couldn’t complete it. He didn’t need to jump; he should have taken it at waist height, but he missed. There’s no doubt that Vaibhav is talented with the bat, but he is still not ready when it comes to fielding.”
Despite his fielding struggles, Suryavanshi showcased his batting skills against Delhi Capitals, scoring 46 runs off just 21 balls, including 5 fours and 3 sixes. This season, he has amassed 486 runs at a strike rate of 234 across 12 matches.
