Lucknow, August 1: Uttar Pradesh has made significant strides towards clean and affordable electricity. Under the leadership of Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, the state has excelled in rooftop solar installations as part of the Prime Minister’s Solar Home initiative.
According to the latest list from the central government, 17 districts from Uttar Pradesh have made it to the top 100 in the country. Notably, the capital city, Lucknow, remains at the forefront with 124,167 rooftop solar systems installed.
Ravinder Singh, Director of the Uttar Pradesh New and Renewable Energy Development Agency (UPNEDA), stated that a large number of homes and institutions in Lucknow have adopted solar panels. This widespread adoption has helped Lucknow maintain its top position nationally.
Varanasi, the parliamentary constituency of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, also performed well, securing the 10th position with 48,829 installations. Meanwhile, the industrial city of Kanpur reached the 14th position with 43,289 systems. Thus, three districts from Uttar Pradesh—Lucknow, Varanasi, and Kanpur—are now among the top 15 in the country.
The increasing awareness about rooftop solar among the residents of these districts is evident in their rankings. Other notable districts from Uttar Pradesh in the top 100 include Bareilly at 24th with 28,315 installations, Agra at 29th with 26,375, and Prayagraj at 37th with 23,773. Jhansi, Raebareli, and Gorakhpur also made the list, ranking 51st, 56th, and 70th respectively.
The government is providing subsidies for rooftop solar installations under the Prime Minister’s Solar Home scheme, encouraging more people to switch to solar energy. This transition is not only reducing electricity bills but also allowing households to sell excess power back to the grid, easing financial burdens while benefiting the environment. The use of solar energy is decreasing carbon emissions and improving air quality.
Ravinder Singh highlighted the positive impact of the solar campaign in Varanasi, noting the enthusiasm among residents due to its status as the Prime Minister’s constituency. The inclusion of industrial cities like Kanpur in the top 15 indicates that factories and businesses are also embracing green energy.
The Uttar Pradesh government has taken several steps to promote rooftop solar, including awareness campaigns, simplifying the online application process, and improving coordination between distribution companies and agencies for timely approvals. Subsidy funds are directly transferred to beneficiaries’ accounts, ensuring effective implementation of government schemes. As a result, millions of families are now connected to solar energy.
Officials predict that with the rapid growth of rooftop solar installations, Uttar Pradesh is set to become the largest clean energy hub in the country. The government’s goal is to have solar panels installed on as many rooftops as possible, enabling residents to become self-reliant in electricity and contributing to a pollution-free state.
