Washington, December 9 – Following a shooting incident in Washington, the Trump administration in the United States has cancelled 85,000 visas this year across various categories. A senior State Department official stated that this step was taken to protect American communities and enforce public safety standards.
An official from the Department of State said, “We have cancelled 85,000 visas across all categories, including over 8,000 student visas, which is more than double compared to last year.”
Speaking on condition of anonymity, an official explained, “Visas were cancelled due to the involvement of foreigners in attacks on Americans, theft, and various other crimes. These individuals pose a direct threat to our communities, and we do not want them in the country.”
The official added that the Trump administration is adopting a strict approach to visa screening, especially for applicants coming from higher-risk regions. Regarding Afghanistan, the official said, “Since the return of American troops from Afghanistan, the Trump administration has always been concerned about security and aims to ensure that visa applicants do not pose any threat to the country’s safety.”
The official also stated that visa screening will not be rushed. “We will take as much time as needed, and visas will not be issued until we are fully certain that the applicant does not pose a security risk to the United States.”
When asked about reasons for visa cancellations, the official noted that recent policies introduced by the Trump administration provide grounds for visa denial. “The evaluation of such cases is not based on a single criterion,” the official said.
“Freedom of expression is a fundamental American value, and the Trump administration is protecting Americans from foreigners who intend harm,” the official added.
“When deciding an applicant’s eligibility for a visa, officials do not consider just one factor but review the entire profile before making a decision,” the official explained.
The visa scrutiny is taking place at a time when the US is improving its immigration and screening processes after the military withdrawal from Afghanistan in 2021. Thousands of people are seeking resettlement or visas through special US programs. US officials have repeatedly emphasised that all Afghan applicants must pass multiple levels of security checks.
