Unusual Heat Grips Australia as El Niño Raises Concerns

Sydney, September 6 (Daily Kiran) : Australia is experiencing an unusual heat wave as it enters September. Residents in the eastern part of the country are grappling with soaring temperatures. In Brisbane, the mercury is expected to reach 34 degrees Celsius. If this occurs, it would mark the hottest September day in the city since 2019. According to the Bureau of Meteorology (BOM), the El Niño effect has exacerbated these concerns.

Temperatures in southeastern Queensland and northeastern New South Wales are several degrees above the norm. Brisbane recorded a morning temperature of 31.6 degrees Celsius, while Amberley in Ipswich reached a staggering 35.7 degrees.

The impact of this unusual heat extends beyond high temperatures. A fire ban has been implemented in Queensland’s Ipswich and Lockyer Valley. Hot, dry weather combined with strong winds has heightened the risk of bushfires. Just a day earlier, fire restrictions were also placed in the Sydney area.

On Saturday, Sydney’s temperature climbed to 33 degrees Celsius. Meteorologists noted that the maximum temperature during the early days of September is unusually high, resembling summer levels. This is particularly striking given that records have been kept since 1858.

Australia’s weather changes come as the country marks its third hottest spring season. Winter temperatures in Queensland have averaged about 1.8 degrees Celsius above long-term averages.

However, there is hope for relief. The weather department indicates that cooler, drier winds from the southeast may bring a drop in temperatures starting Sunday evening or Monday. Conditions are expected to normalize in New South Wales and Queensland in the coming days.

Meanwhile, the influence of El Niño is raising alarms. The BOM has warned that the current El Niño could be one of the strongest on record, increasing the likelihood of hot, dry conditions and a heightened risk of bushfires in the eastern and southern regions of the country.
