Kinshasa, 3 January: The United Nations peacekeeping mission MONUSCO has expressed deep concern over alleged drone attacks in the troubled eastern region of the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). This incident comes amid escalating clashes between government forces and rebel groups in the area.
In a statement posted on the social media platform X, MONUSCO strongly condemned all attacks targeting civilians and civilian infrastructure, particularly drone strikes. The UN mission has called for an independent investigation into the reported incident in Masisi-Centre, North Kivu province, where fierce fighting continues between the DRC army and the March 23 Movement rebel group.
MONUSCO appealed to all parties to strictly observe the ceasefire, respect international humanitarian law, and implement peace agreements reached under various diplomatic mediations.
The international medical organisation Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) reported late Friday that 42 people were admitted to Masisi General Referral Hospital following an aerial attack on a residential area. The injured included women and children, many suffering from shrapnel wounds and severe injuries. Two patients died shortly after arriving at the hospital.
According to the news agency Xinhua, Masisi is among the eastern DRC areas most affected by the ongoing conflict. The alleged drone strike occurred amid a recent surge in violence between the M23 rebels, the DRC army, and allied groups.
Meanwhile, clashes were reported on Saturday morning around the strategic town of Uvira in neighbouring South Kivu province between M23 and the government-backed militia group, the Raia Mutomboki. M23 had claimed temporary control of Uvira on 10 December 2025 but stated it withdrew a week later.
It is notable that eastern DRC has been engulfed in violence for decades, which worsened after the resurgence of the M23 rebellion at the end of 2021. The Kinshasa government has accused Rwanda of supporting M23, allegations repeatedly denied by Kigali.
