UN Chief Warns of Potential Widespread Conflict in the Middle East

New York, March 1: UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has raised alarms about the potential for a widespread conflict in the Middle East, warning of serious consequences for civilians and regional stability. This warning comes amid escalating tensions, with the United States and Israel on one side, and Iran and Russia on the other, each accusing the other of provocations.

Following a recent emergency meeting of the Security Council, Guterres stated, “Military action risks triggering a series of events in the world’s most unstable region that could spiral out of control.” His comments followed attacks by the US and Israel on Iran, which prompted a significant retaliatory response from Iran in the Gulf region.

He referenced last week’s talks mediated by Oman between the US and Iran in Geneva, as well as an upcoming technical meeting in Vienna regarding nuclear issues, expressing deep regret that this diplomatic opportunity might be wasted. Guterres condemned the attacks from both sides and called for an immediate ceasefire.

US Permanent Representative Mike Waltz emphasized the need for “historical clarity” in this moment, asserting that the US would take action to ensure that “the Iranian regime never threatens the world with nuclear weapons.” He described this as a matter of global security, focusing on the objective of dismantling Iran’s missile system, which poses a threat to its neighbors.

Waltz criticized Iran for its “persistent aggression and violence,” which he believes cannot be overlooked. In response, Iran’s Permanent Representative Amir Saeed Iravani accused the US and Israel of committing war crimes and crimes against humanity by attacking civilian areas. He dismissed calls for “preemptive strikes” and claims of imminent threats as legally, morally, and politically unfounded, asserting that Iran’s nuclear program is peaceful.

Russian Permanent Representative Vasily Nebenzia condemned the US-Israel attacks, labeling them as “another unprovoked armed aggression against a sovereign and independent UN member state.” He warned that such actions threaten the entire region and referenced statements made by US Vice President J.D. Vance regarding the Iraq War, suggesting that lessons from past conflicts have not been learned.

Israeli Permanent Representative Danny Danon pointed to the repeated chants in Iran calling for the death of the US and Israel, stating, “We are stopping extremism before it spirals out of control.”
