New Delhi, 20 November (Daily Kiran): The Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) is planning a major change to Aadhaar cards, where only the holder’s photograph and a QR code would be printed on the card. Personal details such as name, address and the 12-digit Aadhaar number may be removed to prevent misuse of user data.

UIDAI CEO Bhuvnesh Kumar, speaking at an online conference, said new rules are likely to be introduced in December 2025 to curb illegal offline verification practices by hotels, event organisers and other entities.
Kumar explained that displaying printed details on Aadhaar cards enables misuse. He said the Aadhaar Act does not permit collecting or storing Aadhaar information during offline verification, yet many organisations continue to retain photocopies of Aadhaar cards, risking fraud and identity theft.
Under the proposed changes, all necessary information would be stored securely in the QR code, accessible only through authorised authentication. Kumar said Aadhaar should only be authenticated through the number or verified using a QR code, otherwise it could be treated as a fake document.
The rule change will be considered by the Aadhaar authority on December 1, 2025.
To support the transition, UIDAI is preparing a new Aadhaar app that will replace the existing mAadhaar. The updated application will enable QR code-based verification and facial recognition, allowing users to selectively share information while maintaining privacy. It will support verification for various purposes, including hotel check-ins, event entry, age authentication and access to housing complexes, similar to the DigiYatra system used at airports.
