Abu Dhabi, May 20: The UAE has labeled the recent drone attack on the Barakah Nuclear Power Plant as a terrorist act. In a statement released on Wednesday, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs urged Iraq to rein in its aggressive activities, emphasizing that such actions threaten regional security and stability.
The UAE’s Foreign Ministry stated, “This attack is a clear violation of international law, humanitarian law, and the United Nations Charter.” The ministry underscored that these assaults not only infringe upon regional sovereignty but also constitute terrorist acts that endanger civilians and critical infrastructure.
The ministry made it clear that Iraq must immediately halt all hostile activities originating from its territory, unconditionally. It advised Iraq to act as a responsible nation, asserting that these threats should be addressed promptly, responsibly, and effectively, in accordance with relevant international and regional laws and conventions.
Furthermore, it noted that Iraq’s active contribution is essential not only for its own security and sovereignty but also for maintaining peace and stability across the region. Iraq should operate as a responsible and proactive partner while fulfilling its regional duties.
The UAE reiterated that its priority is to ensure regional cooperation, security, and stability. The ministry called on all nations, especially neighboring and strategically significant countries, to collaborate in preventing threats emanating from their territories to ensure security, stability, and development throughout the region.
On Sunday, the UAE’s Foreign Ministry reported that a drone attack occurred at the Barakah Nuclear Power Plant in the Al Dhafra region, originating from Iraq. The attack damaged an external generator rather than the plant itself.
The ministry deemed the attack ‘unacceptable,’ describing it as a direct threat to its security and a blatant violation of international law.
