U.S. Oil Purchase Exemptions Serve American Interests, India Must Define Its Own Energy Policy: Dr. Wail
Dr. Wail Awad discusses U.S. oil purchase exemptions and urges India to establish an independent energy policy.

New Delhi, October 17 (Daily Kiran) : Dr. Wail Awad, a strategist from West Asia, shared insights on the recent U.S. exemptions for purchasing Russian oil during a conversation in New Delhi. He emphasized that the United States often acts in its own interests. “Today there is relief, but tomorrow there could be sanctions again,” he warned, advising India to make independent decisions regarding its energy policy.
Awad believes that the U.S. decision was primarily motivated by its own interests, adhering to its “America First” policy. While he acknowledged that the exemption provides significant relief for India, he cautioned that it is not a permanent solution. This flexibility in oil purchases could also benefit China, potentially easing the pressure on fuel prices for Indian consumers.
Despite the short-term advantages, Awad expressed skepticism about the long-term implications for India. He noted that a deeper understanding of U.S. policy is necessary. “It’s time for India to make autonomous decisions regarding its relationship with Russia,” he stated, highlighting that the U.S. will ultimately act in accordance with its national interests.
He added that while the U.S. has provided exemptions today, it could reinstate tariffs or sanctions in the future. Purchasing oil from any nation is a long-term strategic decision. If a country frequently alters its purchasing patterns, even the closest allies may reconsider the terms of their sales.
Thus, India must prioritize its energy security and foreign policy decisions based on long-term interests, rather than seeking only short-term relief.
