Washington, May 12: U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio engaged in separate discussions with senior leaders from Australia and the United Kingdom. The primary focus of these talks was to ensure the safety and openness of maritime traffic in the Strait of Hormuz, as reported by the U.S. State Department.
Rubio spoke with Australian Foreign Minister Penny Wong and UK Foreign Secretary Yvette Cooper. Currently, the U.S. is actively discussing regional security and maritime stability with its close allies.
According to U.S. State Department spokesperson Tommy Pigott, Rubio and Wong reiterated their commitment to promoting a “free and open Indo-Pacific region.” The State Department highlighted the significance of the U.S.-Australia alliance for regional security and stability. Both leaders also discussed efforts to maintain normal and secure maritime traffic in the Strait of Hormuz.
Additionally, Rubio had a separate conversation with UK Foreign Secretary Yvette Cooper, where the issue of keeping maritime routes in the Strait of Hormuz open was again a key topic. However, the U.S. State Department did not disclose any specific military or diplomatic measures discussed during these meetings.
The Strait of Hormuz is considered one of the world’s most crucial maritime routes. This narrow passage connects the Persian Gulf to the Gulf of Oman and the Arabian Sea. In another meeting, Marco Rubio met with Ethiopian Foreign Minister Gedion Timotheos. This discussion took place during U.S.-Ethiopia bilateral talks. According to the U.S. State Department, Rubio emphasized Ethiopia’s vital role in reducing conflicts and resolving disputes in East Africa.
