Trump Threatens to Deploy ICE Agents at Airports Amid Funding Standoff

Washington, March 22: President Donald Trump has threatened to deploy Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents at airports due to the ongoing partial shutdown of the Department of Homeland Security (DHS). The DHS has been partially closed for over a month, forcing security personnel to work without pay daily.

In a post on Truth Social, Trump stated that if Democrats do not “immediately sign a deal,” he would send his “fantastic and patriotic ICE agents” to airports, promising unprecedented security measures.

According to a report by the Xinhua News Agency, the U.S. Senate was unable to advance a House-passed bill to fund the DHS due to disagreements between both parties regarding immigration enforcement.

Approximately 50,000 Transportation Security Administration (TSA) officers have been working without pay since February 14. The U.S. Congress cut funding for the DHS due to disagreements over immigration enforcement. The DHS oversees the TSA, leading to long lines at security checkpoints in major U.S. airports, with wait times exceeding three hours in some cases. The airports most affected include Houston, Atlanta, and New Orleans.

In the past five weeks, there has been little progress in negotiations between both parties regarding immigration enforcement. Republicans have pushed for funding for the DHS, while Democrats have called for standalone funding for agencies like the TSA, excluding immigration operations.

In September 2025, Trump mandated an additional fee of approximately 8.8 million rupees for employers hiring H-1B visa holders, effective from September 21, 2025. To overturn this decision, a Democratic senator introduced legislation in early March in the U.S. House of Representatives.

Congresswoman Bonnie Watson Coleman announced the introduction of the Welcoming International Success Act, aimed at reversing the September 2025 announcement.
